Blair, Wisconsin

Blair, WI

In 1873, a grist mill dam redirected the flow of the Trempealeau River, creating Lake Henry and kickstarting the development of what is now Blair, Wisconsin. The railroad followed shortly after, giving the city a direct line to Green Bay and bringing in new opportunities for trade, agriculture, and migration. Named after industrialist John Insley Blair, this small town of just over 1,200 people has retained much of its heritage, both in its physical layout and in the strong sense of tradition that weaves through everyday life.

Lake Henry remains the most enduring centerpiece of Blair. Originally built for industrial use, the man-made lake now functions as the town’s recreational heart. It supports panfish populations and is popular with anglers year-round. You won’t find jet skis or speedboats—just the quiet gliding of canoes and paddleboats. Alongside the lake sits Riverside Memorial Park, a multifunctional green space that serves campers, swimmers, and picnickers. Its public pool, clean restrooms, and electricity-equipped campsites make it a go-to spot for both locals and road-trippers. The shaded walking trail that loops through the park connects visitors to views of the lake and dense tree lines, often frequented by white-tailed deer and great blue herons.

Just as the lake shaped the geography of Blair, the town’s traditions have shaped its cultural rhythm. The Blair Cheese Festival, held each September, brings in visitors from across Trempealeau County. Not a novelty fair or rehash of state-wide events, this festival includes a competitive Truck and Tractor Pull on a rare poured concrete track. The event schedule is packed—antique car shows, softball tournaments, a city-wide garage sale, live polka and country music, and a Saturday parade that features everything from dairy princess floats to vintage tractors. Vendors line Gilbert Street selling handcrafted goods and crowd favorites like fried cheese curds, lefse, and German brats with sauerkraut.

Blair’s food scene has developed a following among both residents and day-trippers. While modest in number, the establishments here hold their own in both creativity and consistency. Double Barrel BBQ offers brisket smoked low and slow, with sides like garlic mashed potatoes and smoked mac and cheese that don’t come from a box. The house sauce leans sweet with a vinegar back note, and the smoked turkey melts like butter. Over in Osseo, Burly-N-Bucks has built a reputation on its prime rib Fridays and beer-battered cod, but it’s their elk burger—served medium rare with a cranberry aioli—that surprises most first-timers.

Local business in Blair retains a hands-on, personal feel. Soul Sisters Boutique is a locally owned clothing and gift shop run by two lifelong residents. The store features items made by Wisconsin artisans, including hand-stitched aprons, waxed canvas tote bags, and locally sourced beeswax candles. It’s also one of the few places in the region where you can buy sustainable children’s toys. Lily of the Valley Floral & Gift offers custom floral arrangements for weddings, funerals, and everyday occasions. Known for fresh seasonal blooms and creative designs, the shop also features unique gifts, candles, and home décor. It’s a trusted, locally owned florist with personalized customer service.

The town’s creative expressions spill onto the walls—literally. Murals commissioned by the city depict Blair's Scandinavian founders plowing snowy fields, turn-of-the-century passenger trains coming into station, and wartime victory gardens behind clapboard homes. Public art continues to grow, most recently with a painted grain silo featuring a pastoral harvest scene based on a 1914 postcard from the Blair Depot.
